How to Perform Basic First Aid https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/on-site-training/how-to-perform-basic-first-aid/ Fri, 21 Aug 2015 11:22:27 +0000 https://www.oceansidecpr.com/?p=5215 How to Perform Basic First Aid

In most cases, taking part in a corporate onsite CPR training class will also include first aid. These types of classes are wonderful because they can teach an individual what to do in case of an emergency. CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is wonderful because you can use it to prevent the victim from suffering brain damage or dying.

What is Basic First Aid?

The term “basic first aid” means the process of first assessing the needs and situation and then addressing those needs of an individual who has been hurt or is in some sort of physiological distress. First aid courses, including corporate onsite CPR training, will help you to easily and quickly determine the physical condition of the individual and then to figure out the best course of treatment. Of course, the help of a medical professional should be sought as soon as possible, but there are some things that you can do to make the difference between life and death for the victim.

What are the Steps for Basic First Aid?

There are four steps that you will need to follow in order to perform first aid. These things would be addressed further in a corporate onsite CPR training course, but this is a great introduction. First, you will need to assess the situation and the victim – this includes calling for help. Then, you will begin caring for the victim. Finally, you should be aware of the various scenarios that could take place – there are some fairly common things that could have happened to the victim; then there are some rarer ones.

Getting Started with Basic First Aid

If you witness a victim in distress, you will need to start with the three C’s of first aid. While it’s true that your priority is helping this victim, you also have a right to make sure that you are protected and safe. This means that before rushing into an emergency situation to help someone, you should take a moment to evaluate the situation and surroundings. Pay attention to whether there are things that could possibly cause you harm. After all, you don’t want to rush into a situation where you will end up just like the person you’re trying to help.

If there are things that could endanger your life, you immediately get professional help. Medical professionals, such as paramedics, have much higher levels of training. Basic first aid, such as that learned in a corporate onsite CPR training course, will become completely useless if you end up hurting yourself.

After assessing the situation, you’re going to need to call for help. If you feel like the individual is seriously injured, you should call for help immediately. On the other hand, if you’re the only one on the scene, and the victim is not breathing, attempt to establish breathing again before calling for help. You should make sure that you never leave the victim alone for an extended period of time.

Finally, now that professional medical help is on the way, you can begin using your first aid training that you learned in your corporate onsite CPR training course to treat the victim. Keep in mind that taking care of a victim that has just experienced a serious trauma will include both emotional support and physical treatment.

One of the most important things to do is to keep yourself calm and try to reassure the victim. Let them know that you do have help on the way and everything is going to be okay. Remember, taking a corporate onsite CPR training class will be the best way to learn both CPR and first aid.

5 Benefits of Onsite CPR Training https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/bls-classes/5-benefits-of-onsite-cpr-training/ Wed, 15 Jul 2015 21:39:35 +0000 https://www.oceansidecpr.com/?p=5190 5 Benefits of Onsite CPR Training

Do you provide corporate onsite CPR training for your employees and coworkers? If not, you should think about looking into CPR training programs and seeing if it’s something that your employees would be interested in. CPR training is important and useful for everyone, no matter their age or profession. The skills were once limited to lifeguards and medical professionals, but now more and more people are learning how to perform CPR because of the great benefits that the training can provide. Here are some of the biggest benefits of corporate onsite CPR training. If you’re interested in providing training to your employees, contact us today.

  1. Giving Your Employees Confidence

The idea of being thrust in a situation where you have to save someone’s life is very intimidating for most people. Without an understanding of CPR and training, many people feel helpless in these situations, and even if these situations never occur, the fact that they don’t know how to act can make them less confident. After completing CPR training, your employees will feel more confident because they know that they could potentially save someone’s life during an emergency.

  1. Team-Building and Leadership

Whenever your team has to work together, learn something new, and take on a new task, it’s a great opportunity for team-building in the office. Office safety is a fantastic project that can bring together employees from different departments and parts of an office, allowing them to collaborate and work together. Corporate onsite CPR training and first aid training can be part of these types of projects, or can be a great way to kick off an office safety program.

  1. AED and First Aid Training

CPR programs do not focus solely on how to provide CPR. These programs can also teach your employees how to provide first aid and how to use an automated external defibrillator. This type of training will give your employees the skills to respond in any type of emergency situation in the workplace.

  1. Saving Lives at Work

Ultimately, you provide corporate onsite CPR training so that your employees can use it if there is ever an emergency. Immediate CPR and defibrillation can be the difference between someone living or dying, so it’s extremely important that someone nearby is trained and ready to help. Only about 10% of people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest are able to survive by the time they reach the hospital. Providing CPR and defibrillation correctly and right away can double or even triple a person’s chance of surviving.

  1. CPR for Families and Children

Not only will CPR training make the office safer, it will also make your employees’ homes much safer in the event of an emergency. Almost 90% of sudden cardiac arrests occur in the home, and with the proper training, your employees will be able to perform CPR on loved ones and family members. This type of training is especially important if family members have heart problems or if there are young children in the household. If a child has an issue, someone trained in CPR will know how to adjust the technique to make it more effective on a child.

These are just a few of the many benefits of corporate onsite CPR training. Your employees will be very grateful to you for providing corporate onsite CPR training, and the program will be very beneficial for your organization as well. Corporate onsite CPR training programs can be customized to include AED and first aid training, and they can be scheduled to be more convenient for a busy office with lots of deadlines. Five Reasons NJ Children Should Take CPR and/or First Aid Classes https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/cpr-classes/five-reasons-nj-children-take-cpr-andor-first-aid-classes/ https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/cpr-classes/five-reasons-nj-children-take-cpr-andor-first-aid-classes/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2014 10:49:29 +0000 https://www.oceansidecpr.com/?p=3630 If you think only adults can learn CPR and First Aid, think again. Anyone can learn these lifesaving skills and everyone should. If your child is faced with a cardiac emergency situation you want them to empowered with the knowledge of how to react and not helpless because they do not have training. Here are 5 reasons you should consider enrolling your child in a First Aid and/or CPR Class in NJ

1. The majority of cardiac issues occur in the home. In fact, statistics show that 80 percent of the 300,000 annual sudden cardiac arrests occur at home. That means it is possible your child will need to be able to recognize a cardiac arrest situation and react appropriately to save the life of a loved one. Having appropriate training is essential to a successful outcome in an emergency situation.

2. When a bystander provides CPR immediately the likelihood of survival doubles or triples. Therefore correct use of CPR skills is imperative for the victim of cardiac arrest.

3. CPR and First Aid training will provide your child self-confidence that they know how to handle a situation. Many parents figure their child may not be strong enough to actually provide CPR chest compressions and therefore it isn’t worthwhile to train them. However, identifying an issue exists and calling for help are two important steps in the training program that increase the likelihood of survival.

4. Kids can help other kids. Even if a child is not strong enough to perform compressions on an adult, the training will provide them the appropriate knowledge to help other children. School age siblings may be left at home for short periods of time while a parent runs an errand. Or siblings may be playing together unattended for a short period when an issue occurs. Those that are trained in CPR and First Aid can take immediate action if an emergency arises when no adult is nearby to react.

5. Learning CPR and First Aid does more than teach your child how to save a life. They will learn how to spot dangers such as downed power lines. They will be able to assist someone who has had an accident after they have verified it is safe for them to provide assistance. They will know how to get help in an emergency and what information they need to provide emergency responders.

For additional information about First Aid and CPR classes for children contact us. We are willing to come directly to our clients and provide classes in a setting that is comfortable for the client. This may be preferred for children who will be intimidated by an industrial setting. We will teach at a pace that is appropriate for children and ensure the class is presented in a relaxed manner.

How to spot a stroke https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/bls-classes/spot-stroke/ https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/bls-classes/spot-stroke/#respond Sun, 13 Jul 2014 11:42:08 +0000 https://www.oceansidecpr.com/?p=3616

THINK YOU ARE HAVING A STROKE? CALL 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY!

F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the sudden signs of stroke. When you can spot the signs, you’ll know that you need to call 9-1-1 for help right away. F.A.S.T. is:

F Face Drooping – Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?
A Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm driftdownward?
S Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?
T Time to call 9-1-1 – If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get the person to the hospital immediately. Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared.

Counte Cooley survives heart attack thanks to strangers

“I didn’t have a pulse and I wasn’t breathing. But I was by the time they got through with me,” Counte Cooley said of surviving a recent cardiac arrest.

Just four days before, Cooley, owner of Electronic Sales Co. in Gainesville, had returned from Fullerton, Calif. He had won first in his division in the National Racquetball Championship.

After his victory, the 69-year-old got back into the swing of routine and went to play with his regular league Monday night at LA Fitness in Buford. After telling the other players about his experience at the championship, Cooley and another player decided to play a game.

“He’d beat me a couple of times before, a few weeks ago, so I was really focused on the game,” Cooley said. “I beat him. Then I came out and we were high-fiving and bantering back and forth about the game. I went up to the front desk … halfway there I hit the ground. I have no recollection. I went from walking to nothing to people bouncing on my chest.”

Cooley said his cardiologist at Northeast Georgia Medical Center later told him it was likely he suffered cardiac arrest because of ventricular tachycardia, a rapid heart rate.

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 360,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States and fewer than 8 percent of people survive. Fortunately, effective CPR can double or triple the odds of survival.

Cooley experienced the fortunate fate of having a heart attack in a place where three people knew and performed CPR. They increased his odds of survival, ultimately saving his life.

Cooley has a very hazy memory of the event, but has pieced together the steps people took to save his life.

The Gainesville man lost consciousness and fell into a column, leaving a 2«-inch gash in the back of his head. Two personal trainers and a bystander at the gym who are CPR certified immediately ran to Cooley’s aid.

Marvin Elam, a personal trainer at LA Fitness, said he was working with a client about 50 feet away from where Cooley collapsed.

“I heard a commotion,” Elam said. “I looked over and saw a lot of people gather around. People do faint at times at the gym. It’s something you see occasionally and you don’t get to alarmed when someone faints. But I wanted to make sure someone from LA Fitness was there to assist. So I excused myself and started walking over. Then I heard someone scream ‘Help, Help.’ So I knew it was probably more serious than that.”

Elam said he could see Cooley wasn’t breathing.

Melissa Hazen, another personal trainer at the gym, ran to retrieve the gym’s automated external defibrillator. Tracey Tuggle , a gym patron who could not be reached for comment, checked for a pulse and didn’t find one.

The AED confirmed Cooley’s heart had stopped and delivered a jolt of electricity to kick-start it. Elam gave chest compressions until the paramedics arrived a few moments later.

Cooley said the paramedics later told him they were at the intersection across from the gym when they got the call. The ambulance only had to turn on its lights and pull into the parking lot.

The ambulance took Cooley to the nearby emergency room at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.

The American Heart Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention point out seconds are critical in survival and prevention of long-term damage in a cardiac arrest event.

“The paramedics and the emergency room doctors told me I should find those three people and give them a big gratitude of my thanks,” Cooley said. “My wife and I went to see them. I took them a dinner and some flowers and balloons and told them they were my heroes and my angels.”

Elam said “it felt great” to see Cooley walk into the gym.

“It was pretty traumatic,” Elam said. “You’re watching life leave somebody. I’ve had training in CPR but training on dummies and a living person are totally different. Somehow you have to be focused on what you have to do.”

Hazen, who served in the Marine Corps for 11 years, was trained to handle emergency situations like the one Cooley was in. She called the shots and applied the AED while Tuggle gave breaths and Elam gave chest compressions.

“If you want to freak out, you freak out later,” Hazen said.

Cooley said the experience has “restored his faith” and has shown him how willing people are to help.

“I just feel overwhelmingly blessed,” Cooley said. “The further I get away from the incident, the more I am realizing the impact of the whole thing and how fortunate I was to be where I was when it happened.”

Cooley is recovering and still has to have a number of medical tests. He also has to take time away from playing racquetball.

Cooley said he has become an “AED advocate” and intends to keep one in his business and encourage other business owners to have the devices as well. He said he’s also an advocate for CPR training.

Elam said being trained in CPR gave him the confidence to step in and help and that he believes others should also receive the training.

“I think any person would be in shock and be too afraid to help. They’d be afraid of doing something worse,” Elam said. “Those people that are certified in CPR, if you do see a situation, don’t hesitate to help. The second you waste could be the second between someone living and dying.”

Make a splash with family pool fun https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/cpr-classes/make-splash-family-pool-fun/ https://www.oceansidecpr.com/blog/cpr-classes/make-splash-family-pool-fun/#respond Sun, 29 Jun 2014 10:40:42 +0000 https://www.oceansidecpr.com/?p=3561 Warmer weather brings leisurely days spent poolside with friends and family. As you get ready to dive in to another season of fun in the sun, remember that safety comes first.

With more than 10 million residential pools across America, the opportunities for water recreation right at home are plentiful. But so, too, are the chances of water-related mishaps.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the fifth leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. Children are particularly at risk; one in five drowning victims is age 14 or younger. However, dedicating appropriate attention to your family pool’s maintenance and ensuring you have created an environment of safety will let you enjoy swimming and splashing with greater peace of mind.

The CDC cites “lack of swimming ability, lack of barriers to prevent unsupervised water access, lack of close supervision while swimming” as some of the leading risks associated with drowning. Preventive efforts such as learning to swim (or teaching swimming skills), ensuring at least one person with CPR training is present when the pool is in use and having proper safety devices (e.g., life vests and preservers) readily accessible help reduce injuries and accidents.

Put these measures in place so you can enjoy the fun at hand, without the worry:

1. Designate a “lifeguard.” Always pick at least one responsible adult to monitor children at all times.

2. Know CPR: Before investing in a pool, be sure to take a CPR class. The faster CPR can be administered to a person in distress, the stronger the long-term outcome.

3. Keep your water clean: Pool safety also includes keeping the water clean and sanitary for your family.

4. Enroll kids in swimming lessons: Teach the skill of swimming to children at a young age. Enroll kids in classes to learn the basics and avoid accidents.

5. Teach the parts of a pool: Show children where to locate the drains, pipes and other pool openings. Explain the importance of avoiding these areas while swimming, as they can cause harm.

6. Keep an eye on the sky: Storms can strike at any time in the summer. Be aware of the current weather and the day’s forecast before you jump in for a swim.

7. Don’t rely on toys: Swimming noodles, inner-tubes and other inflatable pool toys do not take the place of a life jacket.

8. Keep a phone close: Always keep a cellphone or portable phone with you while supervising kids in the pool.

9. Keep your pool tidy: Keeping your pool toys and other clutter picked up after use will not only help prevent trip-and-fall accidents, it will also be less tempting for unwanted pool guests to engage in unsafe activities on your property.

10. Fence it up: Keep uninvited guests and potential accidents away from your pool property by installing a four-foot or taller fence, along with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Saltwater pools are making waves

Did you know saltwater pools are the hottest trend in new pool construction? According to Pool and Spa News, they make up 75 percent of new pools built in the United States since 2007.

What’s the difference between chlorine and saltwater? While both pool types clean the water with chlorine, saltwater pools also require a salt generator cell and a stabilizer to keep waters properly sanitized.

Why do customers choose saltwater over chlorine pools? Some feel saltwater is less harsh on the skin and eyes than traditional chlorine pools. However, saltwater pools require additional maintenance to avoid corrosion and to ensure chemical levels are in balance.

Pool care doesn’t get a vacation

If a getaway is on your agenda this summer, plan ahead to ensure your pool is as pristine and inviting when you return as the day you leave.

Work with a local pool care professional to create a vacation maintenance plan that matches your pool’s specific needs and takes into account how long you’ll be away.

Before you leave, clean the pool thoroughly, brushing and vacuuming walls and floors. Test the water and correct any imbalances. Set the timer or enlist the help of a trusted friend or neighbor to ensure the pump runs a minimum of eight hours each day while you’re gone.

Upon returning home, have a professional water analysis performed to ensure that your pool is properly balanced and ready for swimming.

Cardiac arrest and stroke incidents in the workplace along with work-related accidents are among the leading causes of death and disability and the most expensive medical conditions to bear for business establishments in general. Fortunately, employers can take initiative in instituting their own workplace safety measures that will help them keep their workforce stay healthy and productive as well as lower their insurance premiums, worker’s compensation claims and other direct and indirect health care costs. These measures may include the following:

1. A sufficient number of employees should be made to undergo formal CPR training and regular re-training. Provide them access to a nationally-recognized training course such as that offered by Oceanside CPR. With timely CPR intervention, death and disability in the workplace resulting from heart attacks and accidents may be kept in check and prevented from getting worse. In addition, AED devices should be placed in easy to reach sections of the work stations. According to the American Heart Association, at least 20,000 lives could be saved each year through prompt use of these portable electronic machines. Also, keep an adequate stock of medical and first aid supplies in the workplace at all times.

2. See to it that the workplace is at all times safe and secure. Minimize the risk of accidental electrocution by ensuring that all electrical connections and potentially dangerous electrical equipment are always in good condition and out of the way of the employees. Minimize the risk of accidental suffocation or asphyxiation by ensuring that there is adequate ventilation in every work station. Minimize the risk of slip-and-fall accidents by protecting entryways with matting that can keep water, dirt and debris outside from getting inside the workplace. Keep the workplace clean of contaminants and hazardous substances. Conduct frequent routine workplace safety and security inspections, including on precautions for fire safety and escape routes.

3. Institute health improvement plans and programs for the workers such as free or subsidized lifestyle counseling for those who are dealing with obesity problems, addictions and other related health-risk issues. Business establishments may also provide in-house exercise and fitness facilities, or subsidize the cost of membership in external gyms and private fitness clubs. They can likewise arrange that only healthy foods and drinks will be sold and served within the workplace premises. They should make blood pressure monitoring devices available for use by their employees any time they feel they want. It would help if they can also encourage them to take the stairs or even to walk to and from the workplace as often as possible. They could develop and cultivate a health and safety culture in the workplace among the employees by encouraging them with rewards or incentives for submitting doable, inexpensive health and safety suggestions.

Business establishments would do well to remember that managing health and safety in the workplace is not just about social responsibility or about complying with state and federal labor laws. Doing so will reduce their cost as well as increase their overall efficiency. Doing so makes perfect business sense.
